The excursionists set off towards the striking “Torri di
Pietrafagnana”, a splendid natural formation made up of peculiar rocky
formations called “clasts” – these are structures formed by stones transported
and deposited by some prehistoric river and joined together by fine limestone to
form a single block. It is possible to climb onto the structures which
undoubtedly make up a striking part of the landscape The excursionists then
continue along the crest which gradually descends towards the valley of Foglia.
At a certain point they find themselves in the presence of remarkable sandstone
cliffs and the landscape suddenly becomes more natural as in parts it is no
longer possible to see cultivated fields but only cliffs and woods. Both quarry
sites “Logo” and “Lupaiolo” derive from natural elements present in the area.
The name “Logo” probably derives from “Lucus”, a sacred wood. It is possible
that in pre-Christian times the unusual presence of holm oaks (an evergreen oak
typical of Mediterranean environments) clinging to the cliffs and growing in
rather sweet soils, effected the local inhabitants to such an extent that they
consecrated the site. The excursionists have a packed lunch in the shade of the
cliffs. Afterwards they reach the “Torre Cotogna”, the ruins of the old castle
of Lunano. A short visit can be made around the ruins and then to Lunano itself.
The guides then take the excursionists back to their own cars and the walk comes
to an end.
