Transfer to the beginning of the trail in the beech wood
of Pianacquadio. The excursion starts almost immediately in the magnificent
beech wood which is really monumental in some parts. This is a residual forest
of limited extension once containing other tree formations which covered the
entire ridge of Carpegna and which also included specimens of the European fir
as well as the beech. The excursionists reach the place in which two military
jet fighters crashed in 1984. The only sign of the accident left today is a
small clearing between the trees which is in the process of being covered by
vegetation.
The excursionists then leave the beech forest and find themselves on the bright
meadows which gently rise to the top of the rocky slope which sharply shuts off
almost the entire mountain on the north side. Once they reach the edge of the
slope the excursionists can enjoy the vast view which spans the Valmarecchia,
Romagna and the eastern side of the Casentinesi forests. From this point they
continue and arrive at the small but charming refuge of the “fontanelle”, with
its stone roof, where they have their packed lunch. From here they go up again
until they reach the meadows of Monte Carpegna. The excursion continues in the
open expanse and goes across the vast grassy high plain in a crosswise
direction. The view stretches from M.Falterona, to Catenaio, Verna (AR - FO), to
Catria and Nerone (PU), as well as San Vicino (MC). They reach the opposite part
of the flat ground where there is a slope on the other side and go down along
its edge up to the Passo del Trabocchino, which hangs over the village of
Carpegna. From here they walk to the Eremo di Madonna del Faggio where the
excursion comes to an end. The guides then accompany the group back to their
cars.
