After meeting the guides the group heads towards the
Cantoniera Pass which connects the valley of Foglia (Marche) to that of
Marecchia (Romagna). After having parked their cars the excursionists reach the
“Ranco del Cerro”, which is 1000 metres above sea level and start the excursion.
They cross the vast expanse of oaks – a real forest called “Macchia del Sasso”
and as well as oaks there are beeches, European hornbeams and a variety of
grasses and flowers typical of beech forests and more generally of high altitude
environments. This is because originally the wood must have been a mixed fir and
beech wood which as a result of repeated cutting suffered a degradation of the
soil. Compared to all mountain trees it is the oak which tends to resist much
better in clay soils such as these. The trail continues without any particular
signs except for the white and red ones of the path itself and this apparent
lack of markers gives the excursionists the impression of being in an immense
forest.
After a while the excursionists reach a pass between two rocks (Simone e
Simoncello), which are both visible from this point given that the beech trees
become sparser. The excursionists are now in Tuscany (Arezzo) and go down the
west slope crossing the huge fused mass of rocks which became dislodged from
Sasso Simone and over time drifted onto the clay soil to form a peculiar kind of
“river of stone”.
They then go up the Medicea road to Città del Sasso, a town created by the
Medici in the Renaissance as an outpost in their expansion eastwards of the
boundaries of Florence considered too restricted. The excursionists walk around
the fascinating ruins and climb up to the cross placed in the middle of the high
plain of Sasso Simone, which is completely flat and cragged on all sides. At
1.30 the excursionists have a packed lunch by the ash trees.
They then walk around the high plain with a possible view (obviously much care
is required) of the overhanging rock.
The walk back is short but fascinating. The excursionists walk on the huge
badlands of coloured clay which overlook “Case Barboni” where the excursion ends.
From here the guides accompany the group to their cars.
